Welcome to Breda Academy

Our School Community!

Breda Academy is a vibrant and flourishing school community in its 10th year which continues to grow and build on our enduring achievements and move from strength to strength! It is a vibrant, diverse, and successful all-ability school in South Belfast with 825 students aged 11 to 19 and 95 members of staff. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming, warm, friendly, and caring school where we place a very high value on establishing and nurturing strong positive relationships between students, staff, and parents/carers.

Students are expected to be safe, polite, and ready to learn and develop core values and behaviours such as respect, responsibility, charity, and kindness, as we give these ‘values’ equal importance to attaining academic results. Developing these values will also help our students to be more open minded, tolerant, forgiving, supportive, and caring of each other regardless of gender, background, ethnicity, culture and/or religion.

We take pride in celebrating the many talents and achievements of our students, and in particular reward their effort and positive attitude, and encourage them to learn from their mistakes, as it is our central belief that much can be accomplished through hard work and by not giving up.

In the past eight years, due to the combined hard work and resilience of our students and staff, our examination results have continued to increase significantly. In August 2025, 96% of Year 12 students attained 5 A* - C GCSE/Level 2 grades and in the past 4 Years 96% of 400 Year 12 students have attained 5 A* - C GCSE/Level 2 grades. Also in 2025, 73% of our Year 14 students attained 3 A* to C A Level/Level 3 grades, meaning that in the past 4 Years 70% of 350 Year 14 students have attained 3 A* to C A Level/Level 3 grades.

We continue to expand as a community and in September we welcomed 130 new Year 8 students who are now flourishing and enjoying school life. We are very proud that the Academy offers all students a 7-year learning journey and our 6th Form continues to grow and thrive, and we currently have a record 184 Year 13 and 14 students studying A-Level and Level 3 qualifications and taking advantage of our new study centre with its advanced ICT facilities and a full-time member of staff as their study supervisor.

We place our students at the heart of all we do and provide them with excellent pastoral care to promote their wellbeing, tailored support to meet their needs and high-quality teaching to ensure they make continual progress in each key stage of their learning. The Academy provides an inclusive and diverse curriculum and a wide range of qualifications and enrichment opportunities to develop our students’ education, skills, and resilience to be successful lifelong learners, confident individuals, and responsible citizens.

It is our ambition at Breda Academy that students are ‘Learners Today and Leaders Tomorrow’ and when they leave us, they will go on to be future change makers and take an active role in shaping and making Northern Ireland and the world a better place for us all. To quote John F Kennedy the 35th President of America; “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.”

Please come and join our community!

Cape Town by Zoe Today was a long and full day, starting with this morning when we had breakfast at 7:30am then left at 8:00am to go back to Ubuntu to do some sorting for them. We went to their store room and sorted out the kids’ clothes by gender and weather, we then went and saw the babies and unfortunately said goodbye to them, as it was the last time we were visiting Ubuntu. After leaving Ubuntu we went to Tyger Valley for Lunch at Spurs that was chosen by Zack, Adrian and Bailey as they won the quiz night we had. We also did some quick shopping before we left to go to cool runnings to partake in tobogganing which was really fun and great craic, not for Mrs Glasgow though as she was petrified of it… After tobogganing we all went to play mini golf at Eagle Golf Ranges which was great fun. We then went back to the accommodation for dinner which was chicken, rice and garlic bread. A few of the high schoolers from Rallim High joined us for dinner as well; we also gave out speeches to our host Hamid, our tour guide Glenvile, our chef Mo and Elham who is Hamid’s sister and Michelle from Ubuntu to thank them all for the experience they gave us during our stay. #proudtobebreda #bredaacademytravels
Breda Academy went all out today for ‘Pretty n Pink’; staff and students were a sea of pink! It was a difficult task choosing the best dressed staff and student. Well done to all of those who took part and made donations. ❤️ #proudtobebreda #wearecommunity
Day 7 India We started the day early at half past 7 for our first day in school. For breakfast, we had the option of trying India’s version of potato bread (I can confirm it does not beat our own). After breakfast, we made sure we had all the resources we needed for our lessons at the school. Once we arrived, we split straight into our three groups and headed to our different classes. My group quickly noticed there was a significant language barrier between us and the children. We got through the lessons using non-verbal communication, while the teachers helped translate our English into Hindi so the children could fully understand us. Each group taught three lessons across three different year groups. The school has definitely been my favourite part of the trip so far, especially because the children are so excited to see us come into their school. On the drive back from the school, we had our favourite taxi driver, Bitthu. He gives us full control of the Bluetooth music and dances along to whatever we choose (although I’m not sure he enjoys our singing). Once we got back to the hotel, we had lunch. After lunch, we had a workshop planning session to prepare for our lessons tomorrow at the school. This was followed by everyone being dressed in traditional sarees and turbans. We all agreed that the outfits felt very different from our normal clothes. Afterwards, a henna artist came to our hotel to apply henna tattoos to us all. The girls definitely enjoyed this activity more than the boys, apart from Yigit, who absolutely loves the outcome of his henna. Once our henna had dried, we sat down for dinner. We’ll definitely be having an early night tonight. After such a busy morning and afternoon, we’re all feeling very tired but excited for our second day at the school. Cape Town by Lacey Today was a very busy, yet rewarding, day. We woke up at 7:00 am, had breakfast, and then headed back to Ubuntu. The day was a little different from yesterday, as we split into groups and rotated between spending time with the babies, cleaning windows around the building, and helping with some gardening work outside. After leaving Ubuntu, we returned to our accommodation for a quick lunch before heading to the shopping mall. Later in the afternoon, we visited a local high school, where we were given a tour of the classrooms. We then had the opportunity to meet some of the students and learn about their daily school lives, while also sharing our own experiences and comparing what school is like back home. After returning to the accommodation to get ready, we finished the day with a birthday dinner for Mr Moss at Catal Barron. The food was amazing, and it was a fantastic way to celebrate and end such a busy day. #proudtobebreda #bredaacademytravels
Day 6 - India I think today was definitely a day to recharge before we start volunteering in the schools. We began the day with a relaxing morning, making the most of our free time by sunbathing and enjoying the warm weather. After that, we had an orientation session where we learned more about what to expect over the next two weeks and the local language and how to speak basic Hindi. We took part in a group bonding activity, which was a great way to get to know everyone better, with 2 truths and 1 lie, and build stronger friendships within the group. Following lunch, we spent the afternoon in a workshop demonstration session before working together to plan the workshops we will be delivering in the local schools. It was great to share ideas and prepare for the exciting days ahead. Later, we had some more free time, so we walked to the supermarket, stopping at an ice cream shop on the way. Safe to say, me, Charlie, Louis and Yigit ended up buying what felt like most of the supermarket! It will definitely keep us stocked up with plenty of snacks for the rest of the trip. We finished the day with dinner back at the hotel which was a Domino’s before relaxing and getting ready for everything that’s coming up. Overall, it was a productive but enjoyable day, and we’re all looking forward to finally getting started in the schools tomorrow. By Harvey #proudtobebreda #bredaacademytravels
